‘SWEET’ DAN SWEET’S: COMIC REVIEWS OF THE WEEK!

Joe the Barbarian #2

Written by Grant Morrison and Illustrated by Sean Murphy / DC Comics/Vertigo – This is Grant Morrison in prime form.  I’ve been a fan of his work for a spell, but the creator really shines when he’s cutting loose on a creator-owned project.  Joe’s imagination proves to be a much more dangerous place than he anticipated, but when he comes across an unlikely ally can the two of them avoid Ulrik’s Deathcoats long enough to find Pirate Draka and his buccaneers?  Also in this issue Morrison addresses Joe’s Diabetes and the chance that’s he’s just having some sort of a fit, a theory I developed while reading the first issue, but it’s not resolved.  Guess we’ll just have to wait and see if I’m right?

The Mighty Avengers #34

Written by Dan Slott and Illustrated by Neil Edwards / Marvel Comics – So the end of the line is nigh for any book currently emblazoned with the “AVENGERS” logo, and Dan Slott’s baby isn’t going to be spared its spot on the chopping block, but before that happens there’s this whole “Siege” thing they’re going to have to deal with. Seeing as how Loki and Osborn set up the Asgardians to take the fall for the deeds of the U-Foes, and seeing as how Loki is the one who used misdirection and subterfuge to bring together Pym’s collection of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, it’s only fitting that the time has come for all the cards to be laid out on the table. The Avenger’s have been had; Pietro, the mutant known as Quicksilver, has been had; even the Thunder God, Thor, has been had by the God of Mischief, but does that give Scientist Supreme, Hank Pym, the right to build a machine capable of killing the Gods?
